looking for a great day out should look no further than Muertos Bay! (Bahia de los Suenos). On this particular date, anglers were presented with an abundance of opportunities. Fly Fishing Techniques Used
Fly fishing requires patience and practice to get the best results. On this particular day, anglers were using a variety of techniques including various streamers, mainly bait and switch techniques, and spin casting bait and switch. Streamers were used in combination with slow-retrieve casts to entice the bonito from deeper waters closer to shore. Bait was also combined with various jigging motions that created an irresistible option for the fish to bite into, as well as the more typical double-hand retrieving technique for shallow water roosterfish, which are still present in fishable numbers.
Fly Fishing Products Used
Fly fishing requires specialized gear and products to get the best results. On this particular day, anglers were using a variety of items including 9 wt rods, reels, intermediate sinking lines, and fast sinking lines. The line and fly combination was essential for controlling the presentation and performing accurate casts in order to entice the bonito into taking the fly. The bait of choice now is sardinas, which are utilized to get the fish excited about eating. also utilized to give anglers more options when trying to catch fish.

Fly fishing can be both rewarding and frustrating, however on this particular day, anglers had plenty of success. The bonito were plentiful and aggressive, making for some great action. Bonito is a very strong fish, as everything in the tuna family seems to be. Much more species are available and have been biting lately, such as Sierra mackerel and yellowtail, but bonitos are the show’s star for now. As the water starts to warm a little more, look for the yellowtail action to kick off. Fly fishing in Muertos Bay on February 7th, 2023 was great, as it usually is, in one way, or the other.
