Greetings!
Greetings, fellow fly fishing enthusiasts! I have exciting news from Muertos Bay, Mexico, home of the renowned El Gallo Fly Fishing Lodge. The Summer pattern has officially arrived, bringing a flurry of new catches and challenges for our intrepid anglers. So grab your rods, tie on your best flies, and dive in!
First off, let me tell you about the newest addition to our waters: roosterfish. These feisty creatures are showing up every day, ready to put your skills to the test. And let me warn you; they are not shy and downright snippy. So be prepared to put up a fight when you hook one of these bad boys. But trust me; it’s worth it. Roosterfish are a beautiful sight, with their distinctive comb-like dorsal fin and influential body. And they put up a fight like nothing else. So if you’re up for a challenge, give them a try.
Of course, our old friends, the Dorado, are still around, and they’re just as tasty and thrilling to catch as ever. These colorful fish are a staple of our waters and never disappoint. And now that the African Pompano are starting to eat, our fly fishing options are expanding daily. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newcomer to the sport, there’s something for everyone in Muertos Bay.
Now, let’s discuss the details to help you plan your perfect fishing trip. Surface temperatures hover around 82 degrees Fahrenheit, while air temperatures are in the mid to mid-90s. It’s warm out there, so be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, hats, and light clothing to protect yourself from the sun. As for tides, we recommend checking a tide chart before you head out, and high tides are best (9:03 AM and 8:45 PM).
Flies and set-ups: Sardina flies will be best. Try the E.P. sardina and mullet flies. Crease flies are working well for Dorado. The Get Some Gummy is working well all around, and it would not hurt to have some clousers and half-and-half in your box. Bring ten weights, and switch to 12 weights when you see those giant explosions indicating bigger fish. Have both floating and intermediate sinking lines.
Summertime in Baja is an exciting time to fish and arguably the best place for trophy-sized roosterfish on the fly. Book your trips with El Gallo Fishing Lodge now, and don’t sleep on the opportunity to catch the roosterfish of a lifetime!
